“I wish I had desert shoes. Instead I’m riding a camel with my cheetah boots.” -Karesa

Just like the movies! When I was younger, I wanted to be an actress. Not because I wanted to be famous, but because I wanted to travel and be required to do awesome things! …then get paid for it. Years later, I’m not getting paid, but I’m still traveling and doing awesome things like in the movies! Every one probably has a picture in their mind about what riding camels in the desert look like from seeing them in adventure films. Well, folks…it really does look exactly like that! A sea of golden sand, camels, and some locals helping us get around. For us sidewalk dwellers, it’s very difficult to walk in the sand gracefully. These locals directed the camels around, walking in the sand like it was a sidewalk. We traveled across the desert to the highest dune, parked our camels, and climbed up. Sharing the camel with another Filipino dancer, we thought we were fit enough with muscular legs to traverse through this sand mountain. One point for sand dune, zero for Filipino dancers. Halfway through, we had to grab our athletic tour guide’s hand, and he dragged us up to the top. The view was well worth the embarrassment. We saw the dunes and conversed with the locals about how they learned to speak so many languages (Arabic, Spanish, French, etc.). It was an eye opening experience.

Some people may only see silhouettes of camels in the Sahara Desert in movies or in pictures, but this is a site to experience. After watching the sun rise earlier that morning, seeing the desert after a camel ride is an amazing experience only a few people in the world can share.

Life Experience: Ride a Camel in the Desert

Tip: If you’re camping in the desert, keep in mind the weather. It may be hot in the afternoon, but come night time, you’re gonna be shivering in your PJs. Pack a hoodie and some sweatpants if you wanna sleep tight!
